ENERGY STAR smart thermostats installed and set up so your home sees the savings, not just the label.
SMART THERMOSTAT INSTALLATION IN NORTHERN COLORADO
Smart thermostat installation in Northern Colorado is rarely a ten minute swap. The wall plate comes off easily enough. What decides whether the new control actually earns its keep is the wiring behind it, the number of stages your equipment has, and whether the thermostat can speak to that equipment at all.
We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning install and configure smart thermostats across Northern Colorado, on furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and dual fuel systems. Licensed and insured throughout Northern Colorado, and we check compatibility before we sell you a control.

GOOD TO KNOW
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will a smart thermostat lower my heating bill in Northern Colorado?
It can, but the certification number is not a bill estimate. ENERGY STAR certification requires a demonstrated reduction of at least 8 percent in heating run time, measured from a year of field data. What that becomes on your bill depends on your gas rate, your equipment’s efficiency, your home’s envelope and the schedule you actually keep. The Department of Energy puts typical savings from an eight hour setback of 10 to 15 degrees F at around 10 percent a year on heating and cooling combined.
Do I need a permit to install a thermostat in Fort Collins?
A like for like thermostat replacement is not on the city’s mechanical permit list, and Fort Collins exempts replacement of minor parts that do not affect approval or safety. If the thermostat is going in as part of a furnace, heat pump or air conditioner replacement, that larger job carries its own mechanical permit and we pull it.
My house has no C wire. Can I still get a smart thermostat?
Yes, usually. In older Fort Collins and Laporte homes we most often either pull a new thermostat cable, add an approved adapter at the air handler, or specify a control that does not require a common wire. We determine which is practical during the visit rather than guessing from the wall plate.
Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump or dual fuel system?
Many will, but the configuration matters more than the brand. The reversing valve terminal has to match the manufacturer’s convention, auxiliary and emergency heat need to be wired and enabled, and the changeover temperature has to be set for this climate. That setup is part of how we size and commission equipment on our heat pump installation and repair page.
My thermostat says the system is running but nothing is happening. Is the thermostat the problem?
Sometimes, and sometimes it is reporting a fault accurately. A control that calls for cooling while the outdoor unit stays silent is usually pointing at a contactor, capacitor or control board rather than at itself. We diagnose the equipment before we replace the control, and that work is covered on our air conditioning repair page.
