HVAC SERVICES | NORTHERN COLORADO

Ault sits on the US 85 hail corridor north of Greeley, and outdoor coils take the hit.

HVAC SERVICES IN AULT NORTHERN COLORADO

Ault is a Weld County farm town on US 85 at about 4,940 feet, with Xcel Energy electric service and Atmos Energy natural gas. Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning provides HVAC services in Ault for repair, replacement and maintenance on gas furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and ductwork. We measure before we quote, and after a hailstorm we check the outdoor coil before we blame the compressor.

Every Service We Cover in Ault

We work on the whole system, not one appliance:

  • AC repair and AC installation
  • Furnace repair, and furnace installation and replacement
  • Heating maintenance and tune-ups
  • Heat pump installation and repair
  • Indoor air quality and filtration upgrades
  • Whole-home humidifiers
  • Ductwork repair and sealing
  • Smart thermostat installation
  • Ductless mini-splits
  • Emergency HVAC repair, same day, seven days a week

Most Ault calls are either a cooling problem in July or a no-heat call in January. Three pages carry the detail: AC repair, furnace repair and heat pump installation and repair.

Why Hail Matters for HVAC Services in Ault

Hail is the local factor that shows up most on Ault outdoor equipment. Colorado Climate Center research found that a relatively large number of severe hailstorms have been reported north of Greeley along US Highway 85, while the river valley closer to Denver saw far fewer. Ault sits on that stretch, between Greeley and the high ground along the Wyoming border that the same study ranks among the most hail-prone areas in the state.

The research covers storm reports from the late 1980s and early 1990s, so treat it as a long-standing pattern rather than a forecast. The mechanism has not changed.

An air conditioner or heat pump rejects heat through thin aluminum fins wrapped around copper tubing. Hail flattens those fins. Flattened fins block airflow across the coil, so the system cannot shed heat as fast. The result:

  • Higher head pressure and a hotter compressor
  • Longer run times and higher bills
  • Reduced cooling on the hottest afternoons, when you need it most

After a hail event we photograph the coil, measure pressures and temperature split, and tell you whether the fins can be straightened with a fin comb or whether the coil is damaged enough to document for an insurance claim. We do not recommend replacing a condenser for cosmetic dents.

Utilities and Rebates in Ault

Ault homes buy electricity from Xcel Energy and natural gas from Atmos Energy. That split matters, because each utility runs its own rebate program.

  • Atmos Energy gas rebates: a 95 percent AFUE or higher furnace can earn 80 percent of cost, up to $3,000. Atmos also pays $50 for an annual furnace tune-up by a licensed contractor and $663 for qualifying duct sealing. Applications are due within 60 days.
  • Xcel Energy: as your electric utility, Xcel pays its standard heat pump rebate, effective October 1, 2026: $300 per cooling ton for a qualifying ducted air-source heat pump, or $750 per heating ton for a cold-climate model. Xcel reserves its bonus amounts for homes heated with Xcel natural gas, so an Atmos-gas home gets the standard rate.
  • Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit: a qualifying air-source heat pump installed in 2026 carries a state credit applied as a discount on the invoice.

Because Atmos does not pay a heat pump rebate, a dual-fuel setup (a heat pump paired with a high-efficiency gas furnace) often stacks the most rebate money in Ault. We show you the numbers both ways.

Permits and Contractor Registration in Ault

The Town of Ault issues building permits through its CommunityCore portal, and SAFEbuilt reviews plans and performs inspections for the Town. Contractors must register with the Town before they apply.

A few practical points:

  • We confirm permit requirements with Ault Town Hall before replacing a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump.
  • Newer homes inside the Conestoga Metro District need a district approval letter before a permit application.
  • Colorado’s carbon monoxide statute applies statewide, so replacing a fuel-fired appliance means the home needs working carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping rooms.

Colorado has no state HVAC license. Ask any contractor for proof of liability insurance and EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification. We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning are licensed and insured and will show the paperwork before work starts. We also pull HVAC permits in unincorporated Weld County, where no contractor license is required.

Sizing Equipment for an Ault Winter

Weld County publishes a winter design temperature of 1 degree for unincorporated areas around Ault. That is the number a load calculation has to hold at, not a square-foot rule of thumb.

Elevation matters too. At about 4,940 feet, gas appliances need their input adjusted for altitude using the manufacturer’s high-altitude instructions, and outdoor coils move less dense air than their sea-level ratings assume.

One correction we make often: the federal minimum for a gas furnace is 80 percent AFUE. A 95 percent condensing furnace is frequently the better choice here, and it is what the Atmos rebate requires, but it is a choice, not a legal floor.

What an Ault Service Visit Includes

Every visit follows the same order: diagnose, explain, price, then repair or install.

  • A measured diagnostic with written readings
  • An upfront price before any work starts
  • Photos of anything you cannot see yourself, including the outdoor coil
  • A combustion and safety check after any work on a gas appliance
  • A plain answer on whether a repair is worth it on older equipment

Two Calls That Show How We Work

Tune-ups are where hidden installation problems turn up. One homeowner booked a routine furnace and AC tune-up, and our technician found the original furnace had been wired incorrectly by the installer.

Kyla Grasso wrote: “Turns out the folks who installed the furnace originally had wired it all wrong and Steele with HHAC diagnosed it, fixed it, and left my place in better condition and for a very reasonable price, too.”

A tune-up should test the system, not just change a filter. That is how a wiring fault gets caught before it becomes a no-heat call.

The second call came on a hot day with the air conditioner down. Amy Roup wrote: “It was 94* outside and our A/C went out. I contacted Homegrown and they immediately responded.”

Fast response matters most when it is hot, and the diagnosis still comes before the price. Read more customer reviews from Northern Colorado homeowners.

AULT HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET

Should I have my AC checked after a hailstorm in Ault?

Yes, if the outdoor coil fins look flattened or the system is cooling less than before. We measure airflow and pressures, photograph the coil and tell you whether fin straightening fixes it or whether the damage belongs in an insurance claim.

Who provides gas and electric service in Ault?

Xcel Energy provides electricity and Atmos Energy provides natural gas. Each runs its own rebate program, so we check both before quoting new equipment.

Does Atmos Energy offer a furnace rebate in Ault?

Yes. Atmos pays 80 percent of the cost of a 95 percent AFUE or higher furnace, up to $3,000, plus $50 toward an annual tune-up by a licensed contractor. Applications are due within 60 days of installation.

Does Ault require a permit to replace a furnace or AC?

The Town issues permits through CommunityCore and SAFEbuilt handles inspections. We confirm the requirement with Town Hall before we schedule a replacement and handle the paperwork.

Is a heat pump a good fit for an Ault home?

Often, as part of a dual-fuel system. A cold-climate heat pump handles most of the heating season, and a high-efficiency gas furnace takes over on the coldest nights near the 1 degree design temperature.
