EMERGENCY HVAC REPAIR | NORTHERN COLORADO

No heat or no cooling in Northern Colorado? Same-day emergency HVAC repair, 7 days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

EMERGENCY HVAC REPAIR IN NORTHERN COLORADO

By the team at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning

When your furnace quits in January or your air conditioner fails in July, it cannot wait for next week. In most cases, our emergency HVAC repair gets a technician to your home the same day in most cases, finds the real cause on the first visit, and gets your system running safely again.

We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning take emergency calls seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., across Northern Colorado, including Larimer, Weld, Boulder and Douglas counties, Saturday and Sunday included. Most HVAC companies in this market are closed Sunday. Below is what counts as an emergency and what to do before we arrive.

What Counts as an HVAC Emergency

Some failures can wait for a scheduled visit. These cannot:

  • No heat when outdoor temperatures are near the design minimum, which runs about 0 to 1 degree in Northern Colorado
  • No cooling in a home with an infant, an older adult, or anyone with a respiratory or cardiac condition
  • A carbon monoxide alarm sounding
  • A gas odor near the furnace, boiler or water heater
  • A burning smell, visible scorching, smoke, or a breaker that trips every time the system starts
  • Water running out of the air handler or a condensate line into finished space
  • A furnace that locks out repeatedly and will not restart

Everything else is a repair we can book. If you are not sure which one you have, describe the symptom and we can help you.

What We Verify Before We Leave

A repair that restores heat but leaves the cause in place is not finished. On every emergency call we check:

  • Gas pressure and combustion, with an analyzer on fuel-fired equipment
  • Venting intact, correctly sized, and terminating where the code requires
  • Temperature rise across the heat exchanger inside the nameplate range
  • Static pressure and airflow, since a restricted system will fail again
  • Refrigerant charge by subcooling and superheat on cooling calls, never by feel

What to Do Before We Arrive

No heat. Check the furnace filter, service switch, the breaker and the thermostat batteries, because those checks turn a surprising number of no-heat calls into a five-minute fix. Keep interior doors open, and protect plumbing on exterior walls if the house keeps dropping temperature.

No cooling. Check the furnace filter, the outdoor disconnect and the breaker. Close blinds on the sun side. If you can see ice on the refrigerant lines at the indoor coil or at the outdoor unit, shut the cooling off and leave the fan running so the system can thaw before we get there.

Either way, clear a path to the equipment and leave a light on in the mechanical space.

A Sunday Call in September

Christopher Fry called on a Sunday afternoon when his air conditioner quit. The indoor fan was still running while the outdoor condenser failed, and he had a technician at the house within a couple of hours. The cause was not a common one.

“The technician quickly found a pretty unusual problem: two mice had gotten into the condenser and shorted out the capacitor. He replaced the capacitor, got the AC back up and running, and even sealed the opening where the mice had gotten in to help prevent it from happening again.”

He also noted what made it a single trip: “I really appreciated that he had the correct part on the truck and was able to take care of everything in one visit.”

That is why our trucks carry the parts that actually fail: capacitors, contactors, igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches and control boards for the equipment common in Northern Colorado housing. Sealing the opening the mice used is the other half of the job, and it is the half that decides whether you call again in August. Read more customer reviews from Northern Colorado homeowners.

EMERGENCY HVAC QUESTIONS FROM NORTHERN COLORADO HOMEOWNERS

What hours can I reach you for an emergency?

We take emergency calls seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday included, across Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Windsor, Timnath, Johnstown, Wellington, Berthoud, Laporte, Estes Park, Severance, Eaton, Ault, Evans, LaSalle, Kersey, Milliken, Platteville, Fort Lupton, Firestone, Longmont, Lafayette, Boulder, Bellvue, Livermore and Masonville. Send the request through our contact page and describe the symptom, the equipment type and whether anyone in the home is at risk from the temperature.

Can you replace a failed furnace the same day?

In most cases, yes. We can replace a failed furnace the same day in every area we serve, and we handle the permit and inspection request for the replacement.

Do I need a permit for an emergency furnace replacement in Fort Collins?

Yes. Fort Collins requires a mechanical permit for a furnace replacement, and because the appliance is fuel fired, the permit also requires the dwelling to be brought up to current carbon monoxide alarm placement. A permitted non-fuel-fired job, such as an air conditioner or a mini-split, is excepted from that.

It is 5 degrees out and my heat pump runs constantly. Is that a failure?

Not necessarily. Larimer County’s heating design temperature is around 1 degree, and a correctly sized heat pump is supposed to run long at design conditions. Call us if the supply air is cool rather than warm, if backup heat never engages, or if the outdoor unit is iced over and not completing a defrost cycle.

We are in Laporte. Who handles the inspection?

Laporte is unincorporated, so Larimer County is the building authority rather than Fort Collins. Two of the County’s inspection areas are not inspected every weekday, so a replacement there can take an extra day to close out even when the repair itself happens immediately.

My AC quit and it is 90 degrees. Is that an emergency?

It can be. The 1 percent cooling design temperature is about 91 degrees in Larimer County and about 93 in Weld County, so a July failure puts a home at the top of its expected range with no relief. We treat a no-cool call as urgent when anyone in the home is medically vulnerable to heat.
