United Power Demand Charges and HVAC Services in Firestone

The way United Power bills electricity is the local factor that most changes a Firestone heat pump setup. As United Power explains on its demand charge page, residential members pay for energy used in kilowatt-hours plus a demand charge. The demand charge is set by the single highest 15-minute interval of use in the billing month.

United Power names electric heat as a main winter driver of demand and air conditioning as a main summer one. For a heat pump, the risk is the backup heat strip:

  • Electric strip heat draws far more power than the heat pump compressor
  • Strips often fire during morning recovery, when the thermostat raises the setpoint after a night setback
  • One cold morning with strips running alongside a dryer or oven can set the whole month’s demand charge

The fix is in the setup, not the equipment. We stage the backup heat so it comes on only when the heat pump cannot keep up, set an outdoor lockout temperature, and configure the thermostat for gradual recovery instead of a sharp morning jump. On dual-fuel systems, we set the changeover point so a gas or propane furnace carries the coldest hours instead of the strips.

We explain the settings when we leave, because a thermostat change by anyone in the house can undo them.

Utilities and Rebates in Firestone

United Power took over electric service in the Carbon Valley area in a late-1980s territory swap and now serves Firestone. We confirm the provider by address, and we confirm your gas provider at the meter.

  • United Power heat pump rebates (2026): $500 for a ducted air-source heat pump of 2 tons or less, $1,000 above 2 tons; $250 or $500 for a mini-split; cold-climate or high-efficiency retrofits only, applied for within 90 days.
  • United Power Smart Rewards: an annual bill credit for enrolling a smart thermostat.
  • Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit: applied as an invoice discount on a qualifying 2026 install.

Permits and Contractor Licensing in Firestone

The Town of Firestone Building Division issues permits, and SAFEbuilt Colorado performs inspections. Installing or replacing furnaces, boilers, water heaters and other appliances requires a permit.

Two things set Firestone apart from its neighbors:

  • The Town is on the 2018 International Codes, a full cycle behind Boulder, Longmont and Lafayette, so requirements here differ from a job a few miles south.
  • Every contractor needs a Town license, and heating and air conditioning work falls under Class B. Ask any contractor for theirs.

We hold Town of Firestone license CLB26-000155 and confirm the permit path for your address before we schedule permitted work. We also pull HVAC permits in unincorporated Weld County, where no contractor license is required.

Sizing Equipment for Firestone Homes

Most Firestone housing was built after 2000, as the town grew from about 1,900 residents in 2000 to more than 20,000 today. Builder-grade systems in that era were often sized by rule of thumb.

When we replace one, we run a load calculation rather than copying the label. A correctly sized heat pump runs longer at lower output, which is easier on the demand charge than an oversized unit cycling hard.

What a Firestone Service Visit Includes

  • A measured diagnostic with written readings
  • An upfront price before any work starts
  • Backup heat staging and thermostat setup on every heat pump
  • A combustion and safety check after gas appliance work
  • A plain answer on repair versus replacement

Two Jobs That Show the Approach

Heat pump installs in finished homes often come down to the line set route. One homeowner wanted the outdoor unit in a location that made the install much harder.

Buddy G wrote: “My job was quite difficult because the preferred location for my heat pump required extensive work to fish the line set across a ceiling and down a narrow chase. The crew was able to make it happen, and my interior space was not impacted.”

We plan the route before the install day, so the finished space stays finished.

Maintenance is the other half. Mark Caldwell wrote that our technician did an A/C tune-up and they “were impressed with his knowledge, professionalism, and the thoroughness of the work.” A tune-up is also when we recheck thermostat and backup heat settings. Read more customer reviews.

FIRESTONE HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET

Why is my winter electric bill so high with a heat pump in Firestone?

United Power bills a demand charge based on your highest 15-minute use each month. Backup heat strips firing during morning recovery often set that peak. Staging the strips and adjusting the thermostat usually helps.

What heat pump rebate does United Power offer?

For 2026, United Power pays $500 or $1,000 for a ducted air-source heat pump depending on size, and $250 or $500 for a mini-split, on cold-climate or high-efficiency retrofits. Apply within 90 days.

Does Firestone require a permit to replace a furnace?

Yes. The Town requires a permit to install or replace furnaces, boilers and water heaters, and SAFEbuilt performs the inspection.

Does Firestone require an HVAC contractor license?

Yes. Every contractor working in the Town needs a Town license, and heating and air conditioning falls under Class B.

Is a dual-fuel system worth it in Firestone?

Often. A gas or propane furnace can carry the coldest hours instead of electric strips, which keeps the demand charge down while the heat pump handles most of the season.

Which building code applies to HVAC work in Firestone?

Firestone currently enforces the 2018 International Codes, an older cycle than several nearby cities, so we confirm requirements with the Town for each job.
