Kersey sits a few miles from one of the region’s largest feedyards, and outdoor coils feel it.

  • AC repair and AC installation
  • Heat pump installation and repair
  • Heating maintenance and tune-ups
  • Indoor air quality and filtration upgrades
  • Ductwork repair and sealing

Most Kersey calls lead to one of these pages: heating maintenance, indoor air quality and AC repair.

Feedlot Air and HVAC Services in Kersey

The air around Kersey carries more than dust. A study by Colorado State University and NOAA-affiliated researchers, published through the NOAA Institutional Repository, measured summertime ammonia at 14 sites across the northeastern Colorado plains from 2010 to 2015. It found the highest concentrations near large concentrated animal feeding operations. Kersey sits a few miles from the Kuner Feedlot, a 98,000-head cattle yard on Highway 34.

The study measured the air. The effect on equipment is standard HVAC engineering:

  • Airborne ammonia is corrosive to copper, which is what refrigerant tubing and many coil joints are made of
  • Fine dust packs into condenser fins, cutting airflow and pushing head pressure and compressor temperature up
  • Filters load faster, which starves the blower and can freeze an AC coil

For Kersey homes, that changes maintenance in practical ways. We clean outdoor coils more often, check for corrosion pinholes when a system slowly loses refrigerant, and set a shorter filter change interval. On a replacement, we ask about coated or corrosion-resistant coils, which cost more up front but hold up better in this air.

Utilities and Rebates in Kersey

Xcel Energy provides electricity in Kersey, and Atmos Energy provides natural gas.

  • Atmos Energy: 80 percent of cost, up to $3,000, on a 95 percent AFUE or higher furnace; $50 toward an annual tune-up by a licensed contractor; $663 for qualifying duct sealing.
  • Xcel Energy: as your electric utility, Xcel pays its standard heat pump rebate, effective October 1, 2026: $300 per cooling ton for a qualifying ducted air-source heat pump, or $750 per heating ton for a cold-climate model. Xcel reserves its bonus amounts for homes heated with Xcel natural gas, so an Atmos-gas home gets the standard rate.
  • Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit: applied as an invoice discount on a qualifying 2026 install.

Permits in Kersey

The Town contracts with SAFEbuilt Colorado for building inspections, and contractors apply, pay and request inspections through the Town’s CommunityCore portal after registering there. The Town’s permit guides reference the 2024 International Residential Code.

Kersey’s guidance is plain: any work on plumbing or electrical requires a permit, which covers the gas and power connections on a furnace or AC replacement. We confirm the permit with the Town before we schedule.

Colorado has no state HVAC license, so ask any contractor for proof of insurance and EPA Section 608 certification. We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning are licensed and insured. We also pull HVAC permits in unincorporated Weld County, where no contractor license is required.

Sizing Equipment for a Kersey Winter

Weld County uses a winter design temperature of 1 degree for the area. We size from a load calculation at that temperature, which on the open plains also accounts for wind exposure on the house.

At about 4,615 feet, gas appliances still need their input checked against the manufacturer’s high-altitude instructions.

What a Kersey Service Visit Includes

  • A measured diagnostic with written readings
  • Coil and filter condition checks on every visit
  • An upfront price before any work starts
  • A combustion and safety check after gas appliance work
  • No pressure to replace equipment that still has life in it

Two Calls That Show the Approach

No-heat calls do not wait for Monday. One family lost heat on a Sunday morning.

T Nelson wrote: “We called them Sunday morning because our heat went out, and they came within a couple hours (on a Sunday!). They needed to replace a part but came back the next day with the part and completed the annual inspection as well.”

When a part is not on the van, we say so, make the system as safe as possible and come back with the right part.

Older equipment gets the same honesty. Mike M wrote: “Though it is an older model, I appreciated that they never pressured me to buy a new one or join a service plan.” If a well-maintained older system still works, we keep it working. Read more customer reviews.

GOOD TO KNOW

KERSEY HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET

How often should I clean my AC coil in Kersey?

More often than in town. Dust and ammonia from nearby feedlots load and corrode outdoor coils, so we usually recommend a coil check every spring and a filter change interval shorter than the label suggests.

Why does my Kersey AC keep losing refrigerant?

Small corrosion pinholes in copper coils are a common cause, and ammonia in the air can speed that corrosion. We leak-test the coil before recharging so you are not paying to refill a leak.

Who provides gas and electric service in Kersey?

Xcel Energy provides electricity and Atmos Energy provides natural gas, according to the Town.

Does Kersey require a permit to replace a furnace?

The Town requires a permit for any plumbing or electrical work, which covers the gas and power connections on a replacement. SAFEbuilt handles inspections.

What rebates are available for a new furnace in Kersey?

Atmos Energy pays 80 percent of the cost of a 95 percent AFUE or higher furnace, up to $3,000, and $50 toward an annual tune-up.

Are corrosion-resistant coils worth it in Kersey?

Often, yes. Coated or corrosion-resistant coils cost more up front but hold up better near feedlots. We price both so you can compare.
