DUCTWORK REPAIR AND SEALING | NORTHERN COLORADO

We repair and seal residential ductwork across Northern Colorado.

DUCTWORK REPAIR AND SEALING IN NORTHERN COLORADO

By the team at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning

When a furnace runs and runs while one bedroom stays cold, the ducts are usually the problem rather than the equipment. Ductwork repair and sealing in Northern Colorado targets the part of the system nobody looks at: the sheet metal, flex, boots and connections that carry conditioned air from the equipment to the room.

We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning test, seal, repair and install residential duct systems across Northern Colorado.

Signs the Ducts Are the Problem, Not the Furnace

Duct faults show up as comfort complaints long before they show up as a breakdown. The common ones:

  • Rooms farthest from the equipment never reach the thermostat setting
  • The system runs longer than it used to with no change in equipment
  • Whistling, rumbling or a booming sound when the blower starts
  • A room that is comfortable in winter and unusable in summer

Each of these can also come from a failing blower, an undersized return or a restricted coil. Sealing a system that is short on return air moves the symptom without fixing it.

Schedule Ductwork Repair and Sealing

If rooms are not keeping up, or the system runs longer than it used to, measure the duct before anyone sells you equipment. Request ductwork repair and sealing, or see the systems we service in Fort Collins.

DUCTWORK QUESTIONS FROM NORTHERN COLORADO HOMEOWNERS

Does replacing my furnace in Fort Collins require a duct leakage test?

Not by itself. Under the 2024 IECC, which Fort Collins applies to permits submitted on or after April 1, 2026, a straight equipment swap does not trigger a duct test. Relocating a quarter of the registers or a quarter of the duct length does.

Do I need a permit to alter ductwork in Fort Collins?

Yes. Ductwork is named on the City mechanical permit alongside furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and mini-splits. Plan on a rough mechanical inspection once the duct is installed and sealed and before insulation is installed.

Are the duct leakage limits the same in Johnstown and Berthoud?

No. Both towns amended the model code to 4 cfm per 100 square feet with the air handler installed and 3 cfm per 100 square feet without it, which is tighter than the 2024 table. We size and seal to the town the house sits in.

My ducts run through a vented crawlspace. Does that need insulation?

Yes. A vented crawlspace is outside conditioned space, so supply and return duct 3 inches in diameter and larger needs R-8, and smaller duct needs R-6.

Can the space between my floor joists be used as a return?

Not under the current code. The 2024 IECC prohibits using building framing cavities as ductwork or plenums, and Fort Collins carries the same prohibition in its amended mechanical and residential codes. We replace panned returns with sealed duct.

We live in Greeley. Do the same rules apply?

No. Greeley adopted the 2021 IECC effective January 1, 2023, and that edition has no 25 percent alteration trigger and no 12.0 cfm alteration threshold. Estes Park is also on the 2021 codes. Northern Colorado is not one code jurisdiction, and we check the address before we quote.
