HVAC SERVICES IN ESTES PARK NORTHERN COLORADO

Estes Park asks more of a heating system than any other town we cover. Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning provides HVAC services in Estes Park year round, and at roughly 7,530 feet the equipment selection, the venting and the commissioning all change. We size from a load calculation built on the Town’s own design criteria, set gas equipment up for the elevation, and write the readings down before we leave.

The HVAC Services We Provide in Estes Park

We cover the full residential range here:

  • AC repair and AC installation
  • Furnace repair
  • Furnace installation and replacement
  • Heating maintenance and tune-ups
  • Heat pump installation and repair
  • Indoor air quality
  • Whole-home humidifiers
  • Ductwork repair and sealing
  • Smart thermostat installation
  • Ductless mini-splits
  • Emergency HVAC repair

Three of those carry most of the altitude work in this town. Furnace installation and replacement is where orifice sizing and vent termination get decided. Heating maintenance and tune-ups is where an input rate that was never adjusted shows up as sooting or a limit trip. Heat pump installation and repair is where capacity at low outdoor temperatures decides whether a system carries the house in January.

Estes Park Is a Different Heating Climate, Not a Colder Fort Collins

Estes Park runs about 7,558 heating degree days a year against 5,918 in Fort Collins, roughly 28 percent more, in the NOAA 1991 to 2020 climate normals. Heating degree days measure how much heating a season actually demands. That gap is not a colder morning here and there. It is a longer heating season, more run hours on the same equipment, and a larger share of those hours spent near design conditions.

Altitude compounds it. At about 7,530 feet the air is roughly 24 percent less dense than the sea level air equipment is rated on. A blower is a constant volume machine. It still moves the same cubic feet per minute, but each cubic foot carries about 24 percent less mass, so it carries about 24 percent less heat. Temperature rise across a heat exchanger climbs for the same fuel input, and a furnace that would run fine in the valley trips its high limit up here.

The Town does not leave those numbers to guesswork. Its local Manual J design criteria table sets an outdoor winter design dry bulb of 4 degrees F, a heating temperature difference of 68 degrees, and Climate Zone 5B. The published Larimer County heating design temperature of about 1 degree F is a valley figure. A load calculation for an Estes Park house has to start from the Town’s table, and every sizing, venting and commissioning decision downstream follows from it.

What Altitude Changes About Equipment, Venting and Commissioning

Three things change on almost every job at this elevation.

Gas input. The adopted fuel gas code requires the flow rate of gas to an appliance to be adjusted for altitude anywhere above 2,000 feet. Above 6,000 feet, manufacturer listings commonly call for a high-altitude conversion kit rather than an orifice change alone, and we check the listing for the specific model before quoting. Estes Park is the only town we serve where every gas appliance in a house sits above that threshold. The derate comes from that model’s listing, never from a rule of thumb, and lowering manifold pressure below the specified range to fake one is an improper procedure.

Venting. The Town’s amended fuel gas venting section requires a vent to terminate at least 12 inches above anticipated snow level and at least 22 inches above the surface or grade directly below, with an exception for direct vent combustion air intakes. Anticipated snow level is a local judgment, not a national number, and it is why a termination height that passed on the plains does not pass here. The Town also prohibits unvented infrared heaters outright.

Sizing. Estes Park amended the energy code so that new or replacement heating and cooling equipment must carry an efficiency rating at least equal to the federal minimum for this location, and so that total sensible cooling capacity may not exceed the calculated sensible load by more than 25 percent on cooling-only work, or by more than 40 percent on heating. Ducted combination systems are sized on the cooling load. There is an exception for multistage and variable refrigerant flow equipment whose calculated loads fall inside the manufacturer’s published capacity range, which is one reason inverter-driven equipment suits this market.

Commissioning is where all three meet. We measure input rate, temperature rise and external static pressure, add subcooling and superheat on cooling equipment, and leave the numbers with you.

Permits and Inspections in Estes Park

Estes Park runs its own Division of Building Safety, with building services contracted out, so a permit here is not a Larimer County permit. Electrical is the exception: those permits are issued and inspected by the State.

The Town has been on the 2021 International Codes with local amendments since January 1, 2024, while most of the valley has moved to the 2024 editions. A furnace, boiler, water heater or AC replacement falls under a Miscellaneous mechanical permit. The mechanical exemption list is closed and does not reach ductwork alterations, heat pumps or mini-splits, so those are permitted work as well.

Scheduling is the part that catches people out. Inspections must be booked by 4:00 p.m. the previous day, and no same-day inspections are granted, so a replacement gets planned around the inspection date rather than the other way round.

Carbon monoxide alarms follow a stricter local rule here than in most towns. Any permitted mechanical alteration, fuel fired or not, triggers the dwelling’s full CO alarm requirement: alarms outside each sleeping area and not more than 15 feet from each bedroom door, though alarms required by a mechanical permit need not be interconnected. We check placement before we file for inspection. We are licensed and insured throughout Northern Colorado.

Rebates Run Through Efficiency Works

Estes Park Power and Communications is a municipal utility and one of four owner communities of Platte River Power Authority. That is why residential efficiency rebates in town run through Efficiency Works rather than an investor-owned utility program, the same route Fort Collins and Loveland customers take.

As of September 2026, Efficiency Works pays $1,500 per ducted air-source heat pump at Tier 1 and $2,000 at Tier 2, which requires cold-climate certification and changeover below 5 degrees F. Non-ducted mini-splits pay $500 per ton. Applications are due within 45 days.

Colorado’s heat pump tax credit works differently. We are registered with the Colorado Energy Office, so we claim it and pass at least a third through as an upfront invoice discount. A 2026 air-source installation carries a $1,000 credit and a minimum $333 discount on the invoice. The federal 25C credit expired December 31, 2025, so there is no federal tax credit for equipment installed in 2026.

A Mini-Split Project, Paperwork Included

Ductless mini-splits are a common answer in mountain homes where adding ductwork is not practical. One homeowner hired us for a mini-split installation and asked us to handle the incentive paperwork rather than chase it themselves. Our owner, Peter, carried the application side of the job along with the install.

Mike Agnew wrote: “Peter and his company are top notch professionals.” He closed with: “Do not hesitate to use this company.”

That is the pattern we aim for on every install up here. One person owns the job from load calculation through commissioning and filing, so nothing falls between the technician and the paperwork. Read more customer reviews from Northern Colorado homeowners.

ESTES PARK HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Do you travel to Estes Park for HVAC service?

Yes. Estes Park is part of our regular service area along with Fort Collins, Loveland, Laporte, Wellington and the rest of Northern Colorado. Because no same-day inspections are granted in town, we schedule permitted replacements with the inspection date built into the plan.

Does my gas furnace need a high-altitude conversion kit in Estes Park?

Most likely yes. Gas input must be adjusted for altitude above 2,000 feet, and above 6,000 feet manufacturer listings commonly call for a high-altitude conversion kit rather than an orifice change on its own. We check the listing for your model number before quoting.

What outdoor design temperature should an Estes Park load calculation use?

The Town publishes its own Manual J design criteria: an outdoor winter design dry bulb of 4 degrees F, a heating temperature difference of 68 degrees, and Climate Zone 5B. A calculation built on a Fort Collins or Loveland design temperature will undersize heating equipment here.

How high does my furnace vent have to terminate?

At least 12 inches above anticipated snow level and at least 22 inches above the surface or grade directly below, under the Town’s amended venting section, with an exception for direct vent combustion air intakes. We look at terminations on maintenance visits, because drifting changes what counts as above snow level over a winter.

Can I get a rebate on a heat pump in Estes Park?

Yes. Estes Park Power and Communications is a Platte River Power Authority owner community, so rebates run through Efficiency Works. We are registered with the Colorado Energy Office, so we claim Colorado’s heat pump tax credit and it appears as a discount on your invoice. There is no federal tax credit for equipment installed in 2026.

Are unvented heaters allowed in Estes Park homes?

Unvented infrared heaters are prohibited under the Town’s amended mechanical code. If one is heating a room in your house, plan on a vented replacement, with a permit and an inspection.
