Filtration and ventilation for Northern Colorado homes from a licensed, insured team.
INDOOR AIR QUALITY IN NORTHERN COLORADO
By the team at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning
Indoor air quality in Northern Colorado comes down to three things a homeowner can actually change: what the filter can catch, how many hours the system moves air through it, and how much outdoor air the house brings in. We work those three in that order, because they cost the least and move the needle the most.
We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning handle indoor air quality as a system problem, not a product sale. Before we quote equipment, we measure what the system you already own can do.

GOOD TO KNOW
INDOOR AIR QUALITY FAQS
Can my furnace take a higher efficiency filter?
Often yes, but not always in a one inch rack. If your system cannot carry a higher rating through its current rack, we install a four inch or five inch media cabinet so the higher rating has the surface area it needs.
What settings should I use when smoke reaches Northern Colorado?
CDPHE’s guidance is to run the fan continuously, close the outdoor air intake or switch to recirculate mode, and run the highest MERV filter your system can handle. Set the thermostat fan to On rather than Auto, and change the filter sooner than usual during a smoke event.
Does indoor air quality work need a permit in Fort Collins?
Ductwork is named on the City of Fort Collins mechanical permit list, so duct modifications are permitted work. A non fuel fired mechanical job such as ductwork or an air cleaner is also excepted from the whole dwelling carbon monoxide alarm upgrade that the City’s amended residential code triggers on fuel fired work. We confirm the scope with Building Services before every job.
Will an air cleaner reduce radon in my Larimer County home?
No. Radon mitigation is a separate trade with its own state registration, and filtration does not address it. Better ventilation dilutes indoor air in general, which helps the overall picture, but a radon problem needs a radon test and a mitigation contractor.
Does running the fan continuously cost much in a Northern Colorado winter?
It depends on the blower. A variable speed ECM motor circulating at low speed is inexpensive to run for long stretches. An older single speed blower draws considerably more, and in that case we usually recommend scheduled circulation rather than constant operation.
