FURNACE REPAIR IN NORTHERN COLORADO

If the furnace is running and the house is still cold, the fault is usually something a technician can isolate in one visit. Signs Your Furnace Needs a Repair, Not Another Reset

Most no-heat calls start with a homeowner cycling the breaker or the reset button one more time. These symptoms mean the furnace is telling you something specific:

  • The burners light, then shut down within a minute or two.
  • The blower runs but the air at the registers is cool.
  • There is a delayed thump at the start of a heating cycle.
  • The furnace trips a high limit and locks out, and a reset only holds for a day.
  • There is soot around the burner compartment or at the vent connector.
  • The flame is lazy or yellow instead of steady and blue.

Every one of those can be a combustion or airflow problem, and every one of them is measurable. That is the difference between a diagnosis and a guess.

How We Diagnose a Furnace Fault

We start at the thermostat and then the control board. Modern gas furnaces store a fault history and flash a diagnostic code, and that code tells us which safety opened and in what order. It narrows the job before a single panel comes off.

From there the readings do the work:

  • Manifold gas pressure and input rate, checked against the nameplate and the model’s high altitude listing.
  • Static pressure across the filter, coil and duct system, because restricted airflow trips more limits in this market than failed parts do.
  • Temperature rise across the heat exchanger, compared to the range the manufacturer stamped on the unit.
  • Flame sensor signal in microamps, not a visual check.
  • Inducer draft and pressure switch operation, including the vent and intake terminations outside.
  • Heat exchanger inspection with a camera where the cabinet allows it.

We explain the numbers to you. If a part is failing, you see why it is failing.

The Faults We Repair Most Often

Flame sensors and hot surface igniters lead the list, followed by pressure switches that open because a vent or intake is partly blocked. After that come limit trips caused by a loaded filter or an undersized return, inducer motors, gas valves and control boards.

The pattern worth knowing is that many of these are secondary. A flame sensor that oxidizes every few months is rarely a bad sensor. It is usually a burner that is running rich, and that traces back to how the furnace was set up for this elevation.

The same logic applies elsewhere in the cabinet:

  • A pressure switch that will not make is usually a vent, intake or condensate blockage, not a bad switch.
  • A limit that trips on long calls is usually airflow, not a bad limit.
  • An inducer that fails early is often running against a restriction it was never meant to pull through.
  • A roll-out switch that opens is a warning about the burner compartment, and it is never the part to simply replace and move on.

Replacing the part without finding the cause buys a season at most. We want you to have the opportunity to make the needed repair once, rather than have us come out again.

What a Repair Visit Includes

Every visit follows the same order: diagnose, explain, price, then repair.

  • A full diagnostic with written readings, not a verbal guess.
  • An upfront price for the repair before work starts.
  • Licensed and insured technicians throughout Northern Colorado, and equipment-specific parts.
  • We can provide photos, upon request, of items that are recommended for repairs.

If the heat is out right now, our emergency HVAC repair team takes calls seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekends included. If the furnace is limping rather than dead, annual heating maintenance is usually the cheaper path than a furnace replacement. We cover the same towns for AC repair in summer, and you can see the full scope of our HVAC work in Fort Collins on our city page.

A Repair That Started With Someone Else’s Install

Kyla Grasso booked a routine tune-up on her gas furnace and air conditioner. During the visit, our technician Steele found that the company that originally installed the furnace had wired it incorrectly. He diagnosed the problem, corrected the wiring and finished the tune-up in the same visit.

Kyla wrote: “Turns out the folks who installed the furnace originally had wired it all wrong and Steele with HHAC diagnosed it, fixed it, and left my place in better condition and for a very reasonable price, too.”

A tune-up is one of the best times to catch an installation problem, because a furnace can run for years with a fault that shortens its life. We check the work that came before us, not just the filter. Read more customer reviews from Northern Colorado homeowners.

FURNACE REPAIR QUESTIONS FROM NORTHERN COLORADO HOMEOWNERS

Does a furnace repair need a permit in Fort Collins?

Usually not. The City lists replacing minor parts that do not affect approval or safety among the mechanical work exempt from permit. Replacing the furnace itself is a permitted job, and so is running a new gas line to a heating appliance. We tell you which side of that line your repair falls on before we start.

Why does my furnace short cycle here but not at my old house?

Short cycling on the high limit means heat is building faster than the blower can move it away. At about 5,000 feet, air is roughly 17 percent less dense than the sea level air the equipment was rated on, so the same blower carries less heat per cubic foot. Pair that with an overfired burner or a restricted return and the limit opens every time.

Is my furnace supposed to be derated for altitude?

Yes, if it burns gas and sits above 2,000 feet. The adjustment is required, but the exact derate comes from the manufacturer’s high altitude listing for that model, not from a rule of thumb, and it is done by changing orifice size rather than lowering manifold pressure.

Do you repair furnaces in Wellington and Laporte, or only in the city?

We repair furnaces throughout Northern Colorado, including Loveland, Greeley, Windsor, Timnath, Johnstown, Wellington, Berthoud, Laporte, Estes Park, Severance, Eaton, Ault, Evans, LaSalle, Kersey, Milliken, Platteville, Fort Lupton, Firestone, Longmont, Lafayette, Boulder, Bellvue, Livermore and Masonville. Wellington sits above 5,200 feet and Estes Park above 7,500, so combustion setup gets checked harder the higher we go.

My flame sensor was replaced last year and it failed again. Why?

A flame sensor that fouls repeatedly is a symptom. The usual causes are incomplete combustion from an overfired or misadjusted burner, a partly blocked flue, or combustion air starvation in a tight mechanical room. We measure the flame signal and the combustion before we quote another sensor.

Is a cracked heat exchanger always a replacement?

Not always, but it is always a shutdown until it is verified. A confirmed crack is a carbon monoxide risk, so we red-tag the appliance, document the finding, and give you the options in writing rather than pressing a decision on the spot.
