Propane, Heat Pumps and HVAC Services in Livermore

Fuel is the Livermore factor that drives every heating decision. Livermore sits outside every natural gas utility territory on the Colorado Energy Office map, so combustion heat here means propane delivered by truck. Electricity comes from Poudre Valley REA.

That makes a dual-fuel system, a heat pump paired with a propane furnace, a natural fit. Poudre Valley REA’s heating and cooling rebates pay $500 for an air-source heat pump of 1.5 tons or less and $1,500 above that, capped at 50 percent of equipment cost, plus a $500 bonus for a dual-fuel heat pump paired with propane. To qualify, the heat pump must be the home’s main heat source, and the installer must record the balance point temperature on the commissioning form.

That balance point is the setting that matters most. It is the outdoor temperature where the controls stop running the heat pump and switch to propane:

  • Set too high, the propane furnace runs on mild days the heat pump could have handled, and the tank empties faster
  • Set too low, the heat pump struggles on the coldest nights and the house falls behind
  • Set right, the heat pump carries most of the season and propane covers the coldest stretches

We set the balance point from the heat pump’s capacity at low temperatures, your load calculation and your current propane price per gallon, then record it for the rebate. When propane prices move, the right setting can move too, and we can adjust it at a tune-up.

Rebates in Livermore

  • Poudre Valley REA: heat pump rebates of $500 or $1,500 depending on size, plus the $500 dual-fuel bonus with propane backup. Applications are due within 90 days of purchase.
  • Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit: a qualifying 2026 air-source install carries a state credit applied as a discount on the invoice.

Xcel Energy programs do not apply in Livermore, because it is not Xcel territory.

Permits and Licensing in Livermore

Livermore is unincorporated, so Larimer County Building issues the permits. The County requires a building permit to add or replace heating or cooling equipment, and a separate permit for propane tank and gas line installations or repairs.

Larimer County also requires a mechanical contractor license. We at Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning are licensed and insured throughout Northern Colorado and pull the permit on every job that needs one.

Equipment for a Livermore Winter

At about 5,890 feet, Livermore is higher and colder than Fort Collins. Propane appliances need their input adjusted for altitude per the manufacturer’s instructions, and heat pumps should be cold-climate models selected for low-temperature capacity.

Larimer County’s design table puts the ground snow load near 68 pounds per square foot at this elevation. We set outdoor units on stands that clear drifting snow, keep them out from under roof edges where ice slides off, and secure them against foothills wind.

What a Livermore Service Visit Includes

  • A measured diagnostic with written readings
  • The common furnace parts on the van, because the next parts store is a long drive away
  • An upfront price before any work starts
  • A combustion and safety check after any propane appliance work
  • Balance point and thermostat checks on every dual-fuel system

Two Mountain Jobs

Mountain homes are where planning and scheduling get tested. One homeowner had a full propane heating system installed during a remodel.

Leif Carlson wrote: “Pete helped with a mountain home remodel. Installed a new propane fuel furnace, thermostat and flexible ducting throughout. Offered a lot of suggestions to improve performance and walked me through every step of the process.”

A remote jobsite needs every part and fitting planned before the trip.

Another homeowner lost heat at the worst possible time. Jojo H wrote: “My furnace went out on one of the coldest days of the year, and I could not be more grateful for Peter and Homegrown.” No-heat calls in cold weather go to the front of the line. Read more customer reviews.

LIVERMORE HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET

Is natural gas available in Livermore?

No. Livermore sits outside every natural gas utility territory, so homes heat with propane, electricity or wood. A heat pump with propane backup is a common setup.

What is a heat pump balance point?

It is the outdoor temperature where a dual-fuel system switches from the heat pump to the propane furnace. Setting it well is the biggest factor in how much propane a Livermore home burns.

What rebates are available for a heat pump in Livermore?

Poudre Valley REA pays $500 or $1,500 depending on size, plus a $500 bonus for a dual-fuel system with propane backup. The Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit also applies as an invoice discount.

Do I need a permit to replace a propane furnace in Livermore?

Yes. Larimer County requires a building permit for heating equipment replacement, plus a separate permit for propane tank and gas line work.

Will a heat pump work at Livermore elevations?

A cold-climate heat pump selected for low-temperature capacity works well here, especially with propane backup for the coldest nights.

Do you come out to Livermore for emergency calls?

Yes. Tell us your road and access details when you call so we can bring the right parts and give you a realistic arrival time.
