HVAC SERVICES IN LAPORTE NORTHERN COLORADO

Laporte sits minutes from Fort Collins and answers to a different building department. Homegrown Heating and Air Conditioning provides HVAC services in Laporte at about 5,064 feet, and because the community is unincorporated, every permit, inspection and code question goes to Larimer County rather than the City. That changes what a replacement has to meet and the day it can be inspected.

The HVAC Services We Provide in Laporte

We cover the full residential range here:

  • AC repair and AC installation
  • Furnace repair
  • Furnace installation and replacement
  • Heating maintenance and tune-ups
  • Heat pump installation and repair
  • Indoor air quality
  • Whole-home humidifiers
  • Ductwork repair and sealing
  • Smart thermostat installation
  • Ductless mini-splits
  • Emergency HVAC repair

Three of those run straight into the County rules described below. Furnace installation and replacement and AC installation are permitted work with hard sizing limits attached. Emergency HVAC repair is where the County inspection calendar decides how a no-heat call actually ends.

Laporte Is Larimer County, Not Fort Collins

Laporte is unincorporated, so the Larimer County Building Division is the permitting authority for mechanical work here. An address three miles away inside city limits answers to a different desk, a different inspector and a different code edition.

The code gap is real and current. Larimer County adopted the 2024 International Codes effective January 1, 2026 and repealed the 2021 codes outright, with no published grandfathering window. Fort Collins applies its 2024 codes only to permits submitted on or after April 1, 2026. Through the first quarter of 2026, a Laporte job and a Fort Collins job in the same week were on different code editions.

Two County rules change what we are allowed to install. First, new or replacement heating and cooling equipment must carry an efficiency rating at least equal to the federal minimum for this location. Second, sizing is capped: equipment is sized per ACCA Manual S on Manual J loads, and total sensible cooling capacity may not exceed the calculated sensible load by more than 25 percent on cooling-only work, or by more than 40 percent on heating. Ducted combination heating and cooling systems are sized on the cooling load.

Then there is the calendar. Two County inspection areas are not inspected every day. One is Monday, Tuesday and Thursday only, the other Wednesday and Friday only. On a replacement, the inspection slot often sets the schedule rather than the equipment does.

What That Means for a Laporte Replacement

Three practical consequences follow for a homeowner here.

  • We confirm which County inspection area the address falls in before we promise a completion date. An address in the Wednesday and Friday area cannot be inspected on a Thursday, however fast the install goes.
  • We run a Manual J load calculation and size with Manual S. The County requires it, and the oversizing caps leave no room for picking a tonnage by square footage.
  • We request an AM or PM window when someone has to be home. Interior mechanical inspections, including furnace, boiler, AC, fireplace and water heater, are one of the few categories eligible for a time request.

Inspection requests confirmed before 11:59 p.m. can generally be done the next working day, subject to that area schedule.

Gas work adds a stage. The County’s gas piping inspection happens after piping, fittings, unions and valves are installed, before anything is concealed and before an appliance is attached, with a 10 psi air test. Underground gas piping has its own burial and wrapping requirements, and field-wrapped pipe may not be installed underground at all.

At the heating and venting inspection the manufacturer’s installation instructions have to be on the job site. We bring them. Clearances and venting are judged against that document, not against habit, and sizing is checked back to Manual J and Manual D.

Altitude and Combustion at 5,064 Feet

Laporte sits slightly higher than Fort Collins, at about 5,064 feet, and the combustion rules follow the elevation rather than the county line.

Gas input to an appliance must be adjusted for altitude anywhere above 2,000 feet. The specific derate comes from the manufacturer’s high-altitude listing for that model, not from a rule of thumb, and the correct method is changing burner orifice size rather than lowering manifold pressure below the specified range.

Airflow shifts too. At around 5,000 feet, air is roughly 17 percent less dense than the sea level air equipment is rated on, so the same blower at the same cubic feet per minute carries about 17 percent less mass and about 17 percent less heat. That is why temperature rise and external static pressure are measured on every install we commission here, not estimated.

Electric Service and Rebates in Laporte

Laporte is Poudre Valley REA territory. PVREA is a member-owned cooperative rather than an investor-owned utility, and its rebate structure reflects that.

As of September 2026, the co-op pays $500 on an air-source heat pump of 1.5 tons or under and $1,500 above 1.5 tons, with a minimum of 7.8 HSPF2, not to exceed half the equipment cost. A dual-fuel bonus adds $500 when a heat pump is paired with gas or propane as the main heat source, which fits a lot of existing Laporte homes better than a full changeover does. Smart thermostats pay $25, or $100 with Power Peak Rewards enrollment. Applications are due within 90 days of purchase.

One limit worth knowing before you plan around it: PVREA rebates are electric measures only. There is no co-op rebate for a gas furnace, a straight AC swap, insulation or air sealing.

Colorado’s heat pump tax credit is separate and does not work like a federal credit. We are registered with the Colorado Energy Office, so we claim it and pass at least a third through as an upfront invoice discount. A 2026 air-source installation carries a $1,000 credit with a minimum $333 discount on the invoice. The federal 25C credit expired December 31, 2025, so there is no federal tax credit for equipment installed in 2026.

When the Fix Is Smaller Than the Diagnosis

Not every failed air conditioner is a compressor. One homeowner lost cooling entirely, and our owner, Peter, went out personally, traced the failure to a blown fuse, replaced it and left a spare behind so a repeat would not mean a second service call.

Andrew Graves wrote: “Our AC went out, and the owner, Peter, personally came to our home and had it fixed quickly. It turned out to be just a blown fuse, and he even left us a spare in case it happens again.”

He went on to describe the visit as professional and said we did not push repairs the system did not need. That is the part that matters to us. Measuring to the actual fault costs the homeowner less, and it is the only way a repair holds through a season. Read more customer reviews from Northern Colorado homeowners.

LAPORTE HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Do I pull a permit from Fort Collins or Larimer County for a furnace in Laporte?

Larimer County. Laporte is unincorporated, so the County Building Division issues the permit and sends the inspector. Furnace, boiler, AC, unit heater, gas line and gas appliance, water heater and woodstove work all appear on the County’s Miscellaneous Permit list, and most can be applied for through the online portal.

How fast can a replacement be inspected in Laporte?

It depends on the inspection area. Requests confirmed before 11:59 p.m. can usually be done the next working day, but two County areas are not inspected daily. One runs Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, the other Wednesday and Friday. We check the address against that schedule before we commit to a finish date.

Does Larimer County require a 95 percent efficient furnace?

No. The County requires new or replacement equipment to meet at least the federal minimum efficiency for this location, and the federal minimum for a gas furnace today is 80 percent AFUE. The 95 percent standard applies to units manufactured on or after December 18, 2028, and that date is under an active federal petition. Higher efficiency is often still the right choice here, but it is a decision, not a County requirement.

Can I just put in a bigger furnace since I am at 5,000 feet?

No. The County caps sizing: total sensible cooling capacity may not exceed the calculated sensible load by more than 25 percent on cooling-only work, or more than 40 percent on heating, sized per Manual S on Manual J loads. Altitude is handled by adjusting gas input and verifying airflow, not by buying a larger unit.

What rebates can I get in Laporte?

Poudre Valley REA rebates apply to electric measures: $500 or $1,500 on an air-source heat pump depending on size, a $500 dual-fuel bonus when it is paired with gas or propane heat, and thermostat rebates. Apply within 90 days of purchase. Colorado’s heat pump tax credit comes off the invoice, because we are registered with the Colorado Energy Office and claim it for you. There is no federal tax credit for a 2026 installation.

Do I need a licensed contractor for HVAC work in unincorporated Larimer County?

In most cases yes. The County has required building contractors to be licensed for work in unincorporated areas since September 1, 2009, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning work falls under its Mechanical license class. An owner doing the work on their own home can act as their own contractor with the County’s homeowner certification form. We are licensed and insured throughout Northern Colorado, and we pull the permit as part of the job.
