HVAC SERVICES | NORTHERN COLORADO

Lafayette’s oldest homes date to its coal-mining years, and many were never built for ductwork.

Older Homes and HVAC Services in Lafayette

Lafayette’s housing history shapes many of the HVAC jobs here. Coal was found on the Miller farm in 1884, and mining carried the local economy from the 1880s into the 1930s. History Colorado’s record of Lafayette’s coal mining era buildings lists miners’ homes from the 1890s on the State and National Registers.

Houses from that era were heated with coal stoves and later gravity furnaces. They were not framed with the chases, soffits and basement runs that modern ductwork needs. Adding central air or a ducted heat pump to one often means:

  • Cutting into plaster walls and ceilings to run supply ducts
  • Losing closet or attic space to an air handler
  • Undersized returns that make the new system loud and inefficient

A ductless mini-split avoids most of that. Each indoor head connects to an outdoor heat pump through a small refrigerant line set, typically run through a three-inch hole and a line cover on the exterior.

We plan head locations by room load, not by symmetry, and route line sets where they do the least visual harm. The City also sends demolition of any structure 50 years or older to its Historic Preservation Board, so we keep exterior changes on older homes modest and confirm with the City when a project touches a designated property.

Utilities and Rebates in Lafayette

Xcel Energy provides natural gas in Lafayette, and the City points residents to Xcel’s electric programs and incentives.

  • Xcel Energy heat pump rebates: effective October 1, 2026, a home heated with Xcel natural gas can earn $600 per cooling ton for a qualifying ducted air-source heat pump, or $1,500 per heating ton for a cold-climate model. Homes heated with existing electric equipment get the standard $300 or $750. Installations must be invoiced by December 31, 2026.
  • Boulder County EnergySmart: income-qualified only as of 2026, paying 50 percent of project cost up to $2,000 a year.
  • City programs: the City lists its own rebates and a group-buy heat pump discount program on its energy page, and we check what is open when we quote.
  • Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit: applied as an invoice discount on a qualifying 2026 install.

Permits, Codes and Licensing in Lafayette

The City of Lafayette Building Division issues permits and performs inspections. Furnaces, air conditioners, evaporative coolers and water heaters are all on the City’s list of work requiring a permit.

  • As of August 1, 2026, the City enforces the 2026 Lafayette Building Code, based on the 2024 International Codes, with an energy code based on the 2024 IECC.
  • All new homes must be all-electric under that code.
  • Basement finishes and additions can trigger radon control requirements, so we coordinate duct and return placement with the rest of the project.

Lafayette requires every paid contractor to hold a City license, and HVAC work falls under the Mechanical License. Ask any contractor for theirs. We hold City of Lafayette license CL-25-000184 and confirm the permit path for your address before scheduling permitted work. For addresses in unincorporated Boulder County we hold Boulder County license CON-25-0042, and in nearby Broomfield, City and County of Broomfield license OL-27-16990.

Sizing Equipment in Lafayette

At about 5,210 feet, we size from a room-by-room load calculation. In an older home, that calculation often shows that some rooms need very little capacity while one sunny room needs a lot, which is exactly where individually controlled mini-split heads perform well.

What a Lafayette Service Visit Includes

  • A measured diagnostic with written readings
  • An upfront price before any work starts
  • Thermostat setup checked against the equipment it controls
  • A combustion and safety check after gas appliance work
  • A plain answer on repair versus replacement

Two Jobs That Show the Approach

Older homes are where planning pays off. One homeowner had a mini-split system installed in a house with challenges.

Sara Crain wrote: “I had a mini split system installed in an old home that had its challenges. The entire team was professional, on time, great at communicating and did a fantastic installation.”

The challenges in an old house are usually framing, wiring and line set routes, and we sort those out before the install day.

Settings matter as much as equipment. During a summer AC check, our technician found a thermostat problem. Bob Acker wrote: “Found our thermostat had not been set up to take advantage of our two stage system. Good work! Now our system will cool more efficiently.” A two-stage system on a single-stage setting gives up most of its advantage. Read more customer reviews.

LAFAYETTE HVAC QUESTIONS WE GET

Can I add air conditioning to an older Lafayette home without ducts?

Yes. A ductless mini-split adds heating and cooling through small refrigerant lines instead of ductwork, which suits older Old Town homes that were never framed for ducts.

Do I need a permit to replace a furnace or AC in Lafayette?

Yes. The City lists furnaces, air conditioners, evaporative coolers and water heaters as work requiring a permit.

Does Lafayette require an HVAC contractor license?

Yes. Every paid contractor needs a City license, and heating and cooling work falls under the Mechanical License.

Can I still install a gas furnace in an existing Lafayette home?

For a replacement in an existing home, generally yes. The 2026 code requires new homes to be all-electric, and we check how a remodel or addition affects your project.

What heat pump rebates are available in Lafayette?

Xcel Energy pays heat pump rebates, the City lists its own programs, and the state heat pump tax credit applies as an invoice discount. Boulder County EnergySmart rebates are income-qualified in 2026.

Is my two-stage system set up correctly?

Many are not. If the thermostat is configured for a single-stage system, the equipment runs at full output and loses the comfort and efficiency you paid for. We check it on every tune-up.
